Objectives:

1) To define the impairments and disabilities that comprise the post-intensive care syndrome.

2) To examine the vulnerability hypothesis as a means by which to understand development of the post-intensive care syndrome.

3) To describe the role of acute inflammation in the development of delirium and of the post-intensive care syndrome.
