Team Matters: How we Care for Kids with Autism in the Dana Program

Introduction
Andrea R. Huebner, Ph.D., ABPP, L.P., is a Consultant in the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Huebner has a joint clinical appointment in the Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine and serves as co-director of the Mayo Clinic Children’s Center Dana Program. She joined the staff of Mayo Clinic in 2014. Dr. Huebner is double-boarded in Clinical Neuropsychology and Pediatric Clinical Neuropsychology. Her clinical focus is autism assessment and treatment. She provides Early Start Denver Model training to parents whose children receive new autism diagnoses. Her research interests include autism phenotypes, comorbidities, and self-injurious behavior in neurodevelopmental disorders. Additional clinical and research interests include childhood cancers and traumatic brain injury. Dr. Huebner’s research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health. She holds reviewer responsibilities for Neuro-Oncology.
Flora R. Howie, M.D., is a senior associate consultant in the Division of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Howie joined the staff of Mayo Clinic in 2017. Dr. Howie earned her B.S. at City University of New York, New York City, and her M.D. at Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C. She completed her residency, serving as chief resident, at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City. Dr. Howie is double boarded in Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics and General Pediatrics. She furthered her training earning certificates of completion for the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, the University of Central Florida in Orlando, and New York-Presbyterian Hospital in White Plains. Prior to joining Mayo Clinic, Dr. Howie was a developmental pediatrician at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, where she served as medical director of the Autism Center and Pediatric Developmental Medicine. She identified unique gaps in services for children and teens with autism and conducted a pilot group recreation study to address motor deficits. She teamed with multiple community stakeholders to develop a work readiness program for youths with autism. Currently, she is conducting a group recreation study in collaboration with a local community therapy center and exploring the use of tele-education to improve access to developmental-behavioral pediatric support. In recognition of her work, Dr Howie has received many awards and honors, including the Outstanding Community Partner Award, Department of Child & Family Studies, University of South Florida.
Sunil Mehta, M.D/Ph.D., is a Senior Associate Consultant in the Departments of Psychiatry and Psychology as well as Pediatrics at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Mehta has a joint clinical appointment in the Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine and serves as co-director of the Mayo Clinic Children’s Center Dana Program. He joined the staff of Mayo Clinic in 2016. Dr. Mehta is double-boarded in Adult Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. His clinical focus is assessment and treatment of neurodevelopmental disorders with an emphasis on Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD. His research interests include identifying interactions between genes and environmental factors that contribute to Autism. Additional clinical and research interests include expanding access to care for children with ASD and testing novel treatment modalities in ASD. Dr. Mehta’s research has been funded by the Simons Foundation, AACAP, and Mayo Clinic. He has been a reviewer for the journals PLOS One, Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders, Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders.
