From Clinic to Neurobiology:  An Integrative Approach to Bipolar Disorder

Aysegul Ozerdem, M.D., Ph.D.


Introduction

Aysegul Ozerdem received her medical degree from Ankara University in 1985, and completed her Psychiatry residency in 1995 at Dokuz Eylul University, Department of Psychiatry where she is currently working as professor of psychiatry.   Dr. Ozerdem worked as a research fellow at National Institute of Mental Health, Clinical Psychopharmacology Experimental Therapeutics Branch between 1992-1994, became an Associate Professor of Psychiatry in 2000, and full Professor of Psychiatry in 2006. She gained her Ph.D degree in Biophysics in 2008.  Dr. Ozerdem chaired the Department of Neurosciences at the Health Sciences Institute of her university between 2008-2011.

                       

Prof. Ozerdem established the bipolar outpatient unit at her department in 1995 where she is currently working as the Director.  Dr. Ozerdem served as the Vice President of the International Society for Bipolar Disorders (ISBD) for two terms between 2008-2012. Dr. Ozerdem had led forming of the ISBD Women’s Health Task Force in 2008 and has been chairing the task force since then. She is also a founding and current executive board member of the ISBD Chapter in Turkey; is one of the founding members, past president and ongoing executive board member of the first advocacy group for bipolar disorders in Turkey (Lithium Society-est.1997). She worked on the organizing and scientific committees of national and international conferences on bipolar disorder, and co-chaired 5th biennial meeting of ISBD in 2012.  She guest-edited the February 2014 thematic issue of the journal Bipolar Disorders focusing on the women’s health issues in bipolar disorder. Dr. Ozerdem authored and co-authored more than 100 publications including two chapters in 2003 and 2010 editions of the treatment guidelines for bipolar disorders of Psychiatric Association of Turkey (PAT). She is on the editorial /advisory boards of a number of psychiatric journals, serving as a reviewer for both local and international journals and grant programs.  

           

Dr. Ozerdem has been an active member of the Mood Disorders Work Group of the PAT since its establishment in 1997.  She chaired the Biological Psychiatry Work Group of PAT between 2012-2014.  Prof. Ozerdem trained a number of residents and PhD students who are currently active researchers in the field of bipolar disorders. 

           

 Dr. Ozerdem is a recipient of a number of national and international awards and research grants in the field of bipolar disorders. She has been awarded as ISBD Scholar in 2015.  Her main research area is neurobiology, mainly cognition, imaging, and molecular basis of bipolar disorders.
