Dr. Alejandra Cabello Arreola is a postdoctoral fellow in the Mood Disorders Unit from the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology at Mayo Clinic Rochester. She completed her training in Psychiatry in Monterrey, Mexico at Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon, where she also received her medical degree and completed  a one-year social service in research at the Department of Pharmacology. She is board certified by the Mexican Psychiatric Association and during her residency program did her international rotation at the same Mood Disorders Unit, confirming her interest and passion for research in this field. Dr. Cabello’s primary research interests center on better understanding the cardiometabolic risk factors in bipolar disorder patients and in the biological mechanisms of suicide from a proteomic perspective.

John Powers is a PGY4 resident originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma. He received his BA from Merrimack College where he studied philosophy. After working variously as a teacher, manager of a group home, writer, and editor, he went to medical school and graduated in 2015 from the Medical School for International Health at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Beer Sheva, Israel. He is best known for being James and Nathanael’s dad, and Kathryn’s husband.

  1. Recognize that having an infant in the NICU is a traumatic experience for the infant's parents and can lead to the development of PTSD.
  2. Recognize that untreated PTSD in NICU parents can result in negative outcomes for the parents AND the child.
  3. Review interventions that have been successful to treat PTSD in NICU mothers.
