Speaker 1:

Suliman El-Amin, M.D., is currently a Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellow at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota where he also completed his residency training in General Adult Psychiatry. Dr. EL-Amin’s research interests include health disparities in mental health, medical humanities, and diversity in medicine. Prior to attending medical school at Georgetown University, Dr. EL-Amin earned bachelors and master’s degrees in biology from Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA and University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford, CT respectively.

Speaker 2:

Sheila Jowsey-Gregoire, M.D.  is a transplant psychiatrist with a joint appointment in the Dept. of Surgery, associate professor of psychiatry, and co-chair of Professionalism at Mayo Clinic, Rochester. She is board certified in psychiatry and consultation-liaison psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She is also a Canadian but doesn’t know how to curl.

Craig Sawchuk, is a clinical psychologist and professor of psychology at Mayo Clinic. He is the cochair of Integrated Behavioral Health and Professionalism. He also really really enjoys coffee.

Christina Coyle, LICSW, MSW has a masters of social work and a masters of public health from St. Louis University with over 22 years’ experience at Mayo Clinic.  She is certified as a Psychological First Aid Trainer through the Minnesota Department of Health.  She is the Family Support Center Supervisor for Mayo Clinic Healthcare Incident Command System.  She has participated in several community emergency response planning efforts and provides trainings.

Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • describe the evolution of diagnostic criteria for bipolar disorder
  • explore disparities and nuances in diagnosis of bipolar disorder among individuals of African Ancestry
  • discuss misdiagnosis of bipolar disorder and its impact on treatment outcomes

Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • identify at least one concept of psychological first aid
  • describe a Mayo Clinic resource for Psychological First Aid
