Mayo Clinic’s Sports Medicine Summit: Care for the Athlete is an online CME course featuring evidence-based and cutting-edge diagnostic and treatment strategies for sports-related and musculoskeletal conditions with a concentrated focus on hip, knee, and foot/ankle conditions in the athlete. The course also involves features of education in primary care update which include lectures on COVID, sports Cardiology, platelet rich plasma (PRP) and concussion care.  The case lectures are represented by healthcare professionals in orthopedics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, radiology, neurology, cardiology, infectious disease, athletic training, and physical therapy.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, also known as COVID-19, is a novel virus with a rapidly changing genotype. It’s responsible for over a million deaths so far. One of every 300 Americans have died as a result of the virus and infection with COVID-19, and it has been responsible for a reduction in life expectancy in the U.S. for both 2021 and 2022. There are 4 widely available, approved vaccines in the United States, yet an inadequate number of individuals have been immunized and very few are still wearing protective masks. The consequences of this include continued excess morbidity and mortality as well as the development of a variety of new variants of the virus. Our guest for this podcast is Greg A. Poland, M.D., an internist, and the director of vaccine research at the Mayo Clinic. He’s also the lead author of an article published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings in December 2022. The article is entitled “Year 3 of COVID-19: Harsh Truths, Brutal Realities and Glimmers of Hope”. We’ll be discussing some of the key points from this article.

Mayo Clinic Application of Quality Improvement: Tools and Methods – Silver Level Knowledge Assessment (formerly Applied Quality Essentials) is a learning and self-assessment activity which aims to evaluate the participant’s knowledge in quality improvement concepts and methods. This Silver Level Knowledge Assessment crosses all disciplines and clinical settings. The following key themes align with ABMS patient safety standards document and are incorporated in the questions and reference material for this module: patient safety, error identification, effect of systems, human factors, communication, culture of safety, methods and tools for evaluating quality and safety events. There are no prerequisites for this course. The module is offered as an online 30-question Pre-test (Test A) and 30-question Post-test (Test B). Test A and Test B are different versions each containing 30 distinct questions testing to the same concepts. The module can be taken as an open book test with an extensive, indexed Study Guide included. Education credit will be awarded if the participant achieves a score ≥80% correct answers on Pre-test (Test A-one chance) or Post-test (Test B-two chances). For Test A, the learner’s choices along with the correct answers for each question will be provided with an overall performance score and relevant references to educational content at the conclusion of the test. For Test B, the learner can choose to display whether the answer was correct or incorrect, with an overall performance score at the conclusion of the test.
