The 30th Mayo Clinic Audiology Conference is an interactive, livestream course designed for audiologists, audiology students, otorhinolaryngologists, and others involved in hearing healthcare, dizziness, and balance. This course focuses on hearing health, multidisciplinary approaches to hearing loss, and factors that may cause or be associated with hearing loss and influence quality of life.

Registration Fee: $110.00

Student Registration Fee: $20.00

Target Audience

Designed for audiologists, audiology students, otorhinolaryngologists, and others involved in hearing healthcare, dizziness, and balance.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify three comorbidities associated with hearing loss.
  • List at least four red flags that all audiologists should know about hearing health.
  • Name two Quality of Life measures that can be incorporated into audiology practice.
  • Recognize when referral to primary care versus ENT is appropriate.

    Host Site Information

    The Mayo Clinic 30th Audiology Conference will be held November 13, 2021. The conference will be hosted on Mayo Clinic’s campus in Rochester, Minnesota and livestreamed to individual attendees and host sites.  

    Similar to past years, we will offer an interactive conference with real-time questions and answers from conference participants. Universities, as well as medical and professional organizations across the country have previously participated as host sites.

    This is an excellent opportunity to provide continuing education for audiologists and others involved in hearing healthcare.

    Host Site Requirements:

    • The host site fee is $300.00 and due by November 1, 2021.
    • Conference attendees wishing to obtain CME/CEUs will be required to pay a $20.00 participant fee to Mayo Clinic.
    • Additional fees may apply for claiming specific CME/CEU credits.
    • Host site must have a reliable internet connection in order to be connected to the live stream feed that will originate from Mayo Clinic.
    • Host site will determine the registration fee and handle all registrations for attendees participating at their location.
    • Host site is welcome to advertise through their own brochures/flyers/postcards, email, website marketing. Please do not advertise specific credit information; direct attendees to https://ce.mayo.edu/audiology2021 for additional details.
    • The host site’s name and contact information will be posted on the Mayo Clinic 30th Audiology Conference webpage.
    • Host site will send all necessary forms (participant forms, attendee sign-in sheet, etc.) to Mayo Clinic for processing.

    Cynthia A. Hogan, Ph.D.

    Cindy Hogan is an audiologist in the Mayo Clinic Hearing Aid Program (Rochester, MN).  She also serves as Director for the Hearing Aid Program and is Chair of the Division of Audiology, in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology. 

    David A. Zapala, Au.D., Ph.D.

    David Zapala is a consultant at the Mayo Clinic in Florida and an Assistant professor in the Mayo School of Medicine.  He has served on the National Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine committee on Adult Hearing Healthcare, and serves on the advisory board of the IDA institute.  For the past decade, he has focused on improving the safety and effectiveness of adult hearing healthcare in the United States of America.

    Paul Y. Takahashi, M.D., M.P.H.

    Paul Takahashi is a consultant in Primary Care Internal Medicine, Professor of Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine, Section Head of Baldwin 6 B Primary Care Internal Medicine Practice, Medical Director and attending physician at Edenbrook Rehabilitation, and clinical practice of older outpatients and nursing home patients.  His research interests are in health outcomes in older adults and the use of genetic biomarkers to predict adverse outcomes.  Research includes hospital readmissions in high risk frail population.

    Colin L W Driscoll, M.D.

    Dr. Driscoll is a Neurotologist and Professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and Neurosurgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He evaluates and manages pediatric and adult patients with hearing loss and disorders of the ear, temporal bone and skull base.

    Howard J. Hoffman, M.A.

    Howard J. Hoffman, M.A. directs the Epidemiology and Statistics Program, Division of Scientific Programs, National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), National Institutes of Health (NIH). This research program is focused on determining prevalence, incidence, risk factors, and preventive interventions for conditions or disorders in all the mission areas of the Institute: hearing, balance, taste, smell, voice, speech, and language. I have served as the NIDCD Project Officer for the Hearing, Balance, and Chemosensory (Taste & Smell) exam components of the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), as well as for several other epidemiologic studies, including international collaborations for the Nord-Trøndelag Hearing Loss Study (1995-1998) in Norway and the longitudinal AGES-Reykjavik Study (2001-2013) in Iceland. I served as co-lead of the Expert Group on Hearing Loss for the 2010 Global Burden of Diseases, in collaboration with World Health Organization (WHO) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. I am also Institute coordinator for the Healthy People 2030 Hearing and Other Sensory or Communications Disorders (HOSCD) topic area.

    Michael J. A. Robb, M.D.

    Michael J. A. Robb, M.D. is a nationally recognized oto-neurologist based in Phoenix, Arizona. He completed his fellowship-training in oto-neurology at the Barrow Neurological Institute and is dedicated to caring for patients with diseases and disorders of the ear and the brain. In addition to outpatient clinical care, Dr. Robb teaches audiology students and has clinical research interests in oto-neurology. His work has been presented at major medical meetings around the country. He aims to bridge the gap between basic science and patient care. Patients are routinely educated on the latest research applicable to their medical needs.

    Christa L. Themann, M.A.

    Christa Themann, MA, CCC-A, is a research audiologist on the Noise and Bioacoustics Team at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.  Christi manages audiometric testing for several large epidemiologic studies including the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study.  Christi is also interested in using new media to promote healthy hearing and developing effective hearing loss prevention strategies for workers with impaired hearing.
