The Pharmacy Professional Development Day is a continuing education (CE) program started in 2018 to provide pharmacy technicians with a venue to obtain live CE, to provide an opportunity for our staff to enhance their professional development by serving as speakers and to continue to expand the institutions’ name in the community.

This course is designed for Pharmacy technicians and Pharmacists.

Learning Objectives

HIV/AIDS Overview for Pharmacy Personnel

  1. Differentiate between the diagnosis of HIV and AIDS.
  2. Review the epidemiology and routes of transmission of HIV/AIDS.
  3. Identify HIV/AIDS infection control precautions in the healthcare setting.
  4. Describe the current recommended antivirals for the treatment of HIV/AIDS and safe-handling practices associated with these medications.
  5. Review the recommendations for post-exposure prophylaxis of HIV/AIDS following needle-stick injuries in the healthcare setting.
  6. Review the confidentiality requirements associated with HIV/AIDS testing from the Florida Omnibus AIDS Act.


Pharmacology Update: Novel FDA Drug Approvals

  1. Identify newly FDA-approved medications.
  2. Discuss the indications, dosage forms, and strengths of the selected medications.
  3. Review the preparation, administration, and stability of the FDA-approved medications.


Oops! Medication Errors and How to Prevent Them- Part I

  1. List the most common types of medication errors.
  2. Identify unsafe practices and risky behaviors related to medication preparation that are associated with patient harm.
  3. Discuss strategies to prevent and minimize medication errors.


Preventing Medication Errors- Part II

  1. Describe the prevalence of medication errors and the related healthcare and societal burdens.
  2. Identify the root cause of common errors and techniques for identifying potential error situations.
  3. Describe the elements of a Continuous Quality Improvement Program and how to evaluate the system’s effectiveness.
  4. Discuss Medication errors impact on patient safety.
