Transforming Education to Enhance Pathways of Inpatient Care Delivery

Introduction

Brian Palmer, MD, MPH is Co-Chair, Education, in the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology at Mayo Clinic.  Clinically, he is medical director of the Transitions Program and the new John E. Herman Home and Treatment Facility.  His clinical and research interests are in Borderline Personality Disorder and its interface with mood disorders.  Within education, he directs the core psychiatry clerkship and co-directs the psychopathology course for Mayo Clinic School of Medicine, and he directs the visiting medical student clerkship program for the enterprise.  He completed medical school at Mayo Clinic School of Medicine before serving as national president of the American Medical Student Association and completing psychiatry training at Massachusetts General Hospital and McLean Hospital. 

Learning Objectives

  1. Articulate three suicide prevention best practices that can be embedded in systems of inpatient care.
  2. Explain how structure and pathways of care can help stabilize symptoms of borderline personality disorder.
  3. Identify two principles for the development of care pathways in inpatient psychiatric care.
