This lecture is jointly sponsored by the Dolores Jean Lavins Center for Humanities in Medicine  and the Biomedical Ethics Research Program.

The vicissitudes of our daily life combined with the ever-increasing demands on our professional life conspire to challenge our very essence.  Beyond the worthy self-care, mindfulness and resiliency training to combat these forces, the humanities offer us the greatest of all insight and joy.

Dr. Shannon will explore how the humanities bring the human creativity of masters and contemporary artists to our service of caring for ourselves and for others.  Burnout is real; yet, so are choices to mitigate it. Drawing on prose, poetry and the arts, Dr. Shannon will illustrate choices that matter to encourage joy and meaning in our personal and professional lives.

Robert P. Shannon, MD is Emeritus Assistant Professor of Family and Palliative Medicine and former Program Director for the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship in Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.  His diverse medical interests resulted in Board Certification in Family Medicine as well as Certificates of Added Qualifications in Sports Medicine, Geriatrics, & Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
