PRESENTER BIO

Sikander Ailawadhi, M.D., is Lead of the International Cancer Center and a Professor of medicine with the Division of Hematology-Oncology in the Department of Medicine and Cancer Biology at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. He joined the Division in 2014 when he moved from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, where he was an academic faculty with Hematology.

Dr. Ailawadhi’s career focus has been on clinical drug development in plasma cell disorders - multiple myeloma and Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia. This has involved implementing the clinical trials seamlessly with the clinical practice in the Division of Hematology at Mayo Clinic in Florida so that the trials can be made available to patients early and effectively. Furthermore, this has also involved managing the clinical trial portfolio so that there is less overlap, wider availability of clinical trials to patients and appropriately serving the needs of the patients with lymphoid malignancies, specifically plasma cell disorders at the institution.

Dr. Ailawadhi’s research interests and accomplishments include clinical drug development by means of clinical trials. This has involved several completed and ongoing clinical trials at the institutional, regional, and national level with a leadership role. These clinical trials have led to early development of several drugs and regimens for the treatment of lymphoid malignancies as well as some large-scale clinical trials done on a national basis where available treatment regimen role has been better defined.

Dr. Ailawadhi has also done significant work in evaluating disparities in healthcare. This has involved evaluation of large databases including that from Mayo Clinic, collaboration with International institutions, population based data from the United States, healthcare claims data as well as collaboration with pharmaceutical Industries and cooperative groups to evaluate clinical trial data for secondary analysis. This has shown how healthcare access and utilization can be significantly different for patients belonging to various racial /ethnic subgroups and how this may affect the care that they receive. This interest has also been the basis of ongoing research looking into disparities in clinical trial participation for minorities and understanding the reasons behind that.
