PRESENTATION TITLE
Cellular Therapy 2021 - Update

PRESENTER(S)

Director, CAR T-cell and Cellular Therapy Program, Mayo Clinic, Phoenix, Arizona

PRESENTER BIO

My area of expertise is translational research and early-stage therapy development applied to hematological malignancies with emphasis on cellular / stem-cell therapy and gene immunotherapy. Currently, I am Professor of Medicine - Senior Associate Consultant and Director of the Adoptive Cellular Therapy (ACT) CAR T-cell Program at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. Prior to this, I worked at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) as Professor of Medicine at the Moores-UCSD Cancer Center. Over there, I led the efforts to develop a cellular therapy unit and brought the first CAR T cell clinical trials to the area.

My research laboratory focuses on translational research applied to the biology of cancer immunotherapy, discovery and optimization of novel antigens that can be used for cellular therapy such as CAR T-cells, RNA splicing as a mechanism of gene / antigen diversity in cancer and models of artificial intelligence applied to immunotherapy patient care. Over the years, my research projects have been supported by a K08 award (Dr. Thomas Kipps mentor at UCSD) as well as independent investigator funding from the NIH (R01, P01) and other philanthropic and research societies (ASCO, ASH, LLS, LRF). I am an active member of several academic societies and biotechnology organizations including the American Society of Hematology and American Society of Clinical Oncology Scientific Review Committee, the NCI’s Leukemia Steering Committee (LKSC), NCCN Guidelines panel committee in leukemia and advisory boards of different biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. My goal is to contribute to the advancement of cellular immunotherapy applied to cancer and bring novel therapies to my patients using translational research in the field of Immuno-Oncology.
