Cardiology Update: The Heart of the Matter 2016 - General Session

A wide spectrum of topics in CHF/pulmonary hypertension, coronary artery diseases, cardiac arrhythmias, preventive cardiology, sports cardiology and valvular heart disease among others will be offered. In keeping pace with current demands, two modules  (ABIM, ACCF) on CV diseases and one ABFM Self-Assessment Module will be offered for purposes of maintenance of certification.

Target Audience

This course is intended for practicing adult cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, cardiovascular trainees, general internists, family medicine specialists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and nurses with a cardiovascular interest. 

Learning Objectives

Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Apply the latest cardiovascular (CV) guidelines to improve overall morbidity/mortality rates. 
  • Describe practice changes to improve care for patients with obesity and heart disease.
  • Summarize guidelines to increase preventive care for patients with CV diseases.
  • Review issues related to cardiovascular adaptations to exercise.
  • Identify cardiovascular conditions of risk for the practice of competitive sports
  • Describe current management guidelines for patients with ICD device infections. 
  • Identify indications and limitations of subcutaneous ICD systems.
  • Apply current guidelines for the treatment of atrial fibrillation. 
  • Identify guidelines for treatment and investigation of acute and chronic thromboembolic disease.
  • Review indications, use, and limitations of pharmacologic therapy for Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). 
  • Apply current guidelines for the treatment of pulmonary hypertension. 
  • Apply current guidelines for the use of antiplatelet agents in acute coronary syndromes.
  • Identify barrier-preventing application of palliative care in cardiovascular diseases. 
  • Apply current guidelines and understand their limitations in the treatment of pregnant women with congenital heart diseases. 
  • Learn about aortic valve disease and associated aortopathy in young adults
  • Explain the current indications and contra-indications for TAVR and mitral valve clip.
