Anesthesiology Update will present the latest findings and recommendations for topics at the forefront of anesthesiology. Topics to include pre-operative preparation of the surgical patient, the cardiac patient in your OR, OB emergencies, neurotoxicity of anesthetics and the pediatric patient, MH updates and post-operative care of the surgical patient. Target Audience

Learning Objectives

Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Describe how to identify patients at increased risk of respiratory depression after neuraxial opiates.
  • Discuss the methods to detect respiratory depression through monitoring for adequacy of ventilation, oxygenation, and level of consciousness.
  • The participants will be able to discuss what implantable patient devices will interfere with the operating room and radiology equipment and how to manage them.
  • The participant will be able to discuss the pharmacology of the new muscle relaxants and reversal agents (Sugammdex/Bridion) used in the operating room and ICU.
  • The participant will be able to discuss the latest findings and studies regarding the  neurotoxicity of anesthetic agents in the pediatric patient and the developing brain.
  • The participant will be able to discuss the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias encountered in the OR, ICU and cardiac cath lab.
  • The participant will be able to better identify personnel practices that are suspicious to drug diversion and how to manage these situations.
  • The participant will be able to discuss the new revised guidelines for the treatment of sepsis.
  • The participant will be able to discuss the diagnosis and treatment of malignant hyperthermia and the new pharmacologic agents available to treat it, should it occur.
  • The participant will be able to discuss new uses of old drugs (ketamine) and variable uses of new, advanced ultrasound equipment in the OR, ICU and ER.
  • The participant will be able to discuss new advances in management of the cardiac patient and blood transfusion practices IN 2017.

Shepler's Mackinac Island Ferry

Shepler's Ferry to Mackinac Island can be accessed by driving to Mackinaw City (on Michigan’s lower peninsula) or St. Ignace (upper peninsula). Get driving directions to Mackinaw City or St. Ignace. Registered attendees of the Anesthesiology Update course Hotel receive a discount by using Shepler’s Ferry and can purchase tickets directly online using the password "MAYO17" or if you mention at the ticket office that you are with this conference, you will receive this rate. . The rate for adults is $19 for adults and $10 for children. 

Parking:
Ample parking is available at Shepler's Ferry and attendees have three different options that include:

On-site self park: $20/night. This parking option is available to purchase only at the ticket office because it is not always available.

Off-Site Drop Off: $15/night. With this option, a valet will take the car to the off-site lot and bring it back to the dock when attendees return from the course.

Free Self Park Off-Site: Free up to 5 nights. Attendees come to the dock first to unload their luggage and then they are directed to the overnight self park lot. A shuttle will bring them back so they don’t have to walk a couple blocks back to the dock.

Mackinac Island Airport (MCD):
Mackinac Island Airport’s 3,500-foot lighted, paved runway is capable of accommodating private and charter aircraft. The airport is one mile from Grand Hotel. Horse-drawn taxi service is available from the airport to Grand Hotel. For more information, please call (906) 847-3323.

Pellston Regional Airport (PLN):
Pellston Regional Airport is located 12 miles south of Mackinaw City. Air taxi service between the Pellston Regional Airport and Mackinac Island Airport are available 24 hours a day. For information, call Great Lakes Air at (906) 643-7327.

Commercial Airlines:
Commercial air service to Pellston is available daily through Delta Airlink in Detroit.

Limousine and Shuttle Service:
Mackinaw Shuttle is available at the Pellston, Michigan Airport for taxi service between the Pellston Airport and the Mackinaw City ferry docks along with other Michigan cities on a 24-hour basis. This service is also available on a charter basis. Reservations are recommended.
