This course is aimed at providing specialized medical knowledge to physicians engaged in diving and hyperbaric medicine. It includes presentations and hands-on workshops on a variety of topics about diving and hyperbaric medicine. This course is organized in conjunction with the department of hyperbaric medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester.


LIVE (in-person) attendees must comply with all live course requirements and guidelines and applicable state and local COVID-19 travel restrictions, guidance and resources.  

Please note that all live course attendees must: 

  • Complete COVID-19 testing of any kind and provide attestation that a negative test result was received within 72 hours or less of the event start date or provide attestation that you received any positive COVID-19 test result within the previous 90 days, that it has been at least 10 days since COVID-19 infection, and that you are currently asymptomatic. 

  • Attest that you will comply with all safety requirements and that you understand the inherent risk associated with being in large groups of people. 

  • Complete your attestation here.

Attendees who are not able to complete the above attestations are unable to attend the live (in-person) event. 

Requirements and guidelines may be amended as CDC, public health and other relevant guidance are adjusted. 

Target Audience

This course is designed for physicians.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Demonstrate proper operation of different first aid oxygen devices in conscious and unconscious divers with the need to conserve oxygen
  • Demonstrate bubble detection with the use of handheld portable ultrasound
  • Perform a lung, focused cardiac and FAST exam using Ultrasound
  • Discuss different strategies to keep divers diving with various acquired health conditions

We have negotiated a substantial discount for the diving activity, which will be paid on site directly to the dive operator preferably in USD cash, but Pesos and credit cards (extra fee) can also be used at the dive shop.

2 tank dives per day per person: $89, (includes marine park fee and transfers to the dive pier) Nitrox add $10 per tank

Night dive: $55 (light rental add $10)

For those who want to certify on site, an online instruction and pool class is strongly encouraged before the meeting so you can benefit from the beautiful scenery that the Cozumel reef has to offer during your open water checkout dives. The cost for the open water referral is $340 and includes 4 open water checkout dives, onsite instruction and completion of the referral form. 

A refresher course, advanced open water certification for qualified divers as well as a Nitrox certification are also available during the week. Please contact torp.klaus@mayo.edu for details.

Personal dive gear can be rinsed and left on the boat for the week.

The boat crew does a phenomenal job and a tip of $10 per diver per day for the boat crew at the end of the week is appreciated but is of course up to each individual. 

Small USD bills are very handy for tips and may not be available from the hotel in sufficient quantities. Taxi cabs are everywhere, clean and safe and have fixed prices for most destinations. They are best paid in Pesos as the exchange rate is up to the cab drivers and prices in USD should best be asked for in advance.
