Mayo Clinic speech pathologists work in close collaboration with multiple departments to complete comprehensive evaluations of complex dysphagia patients in inpatient and outpatient settings. The Dysphagia Evaluation and Treatment: A Multidisciplinary Model course is unique and shares with learners Mayo’s holistic approach on how to diagnose and manage this complex patient. It is designed with intermediate to advanced content for the professional in speech and language pathology, radiology, ENT, neurology, and gastroenterology.

Target Audience

This Continuing Medical Education (CME) course is designed for healthcare professionals seeking to enhance their skills in evaluating and managing complex dysphagia cases in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The course provides a holistic approach, integrating the latest evidence-based practices and interdisciplinary strategies to ensure comprehensive patient care.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify clinical indicators that warrant referral to other specialties (e.g., neurology, gastroenterology, radiology) to ensure accurate diagnosis and comprehensive management of swallowing disorders.
  • Examine evidence-based approaches for assessing dysphagia in diverse patient populations, incorporating interdisciplinary collaboration and diagnostic technologies.
  • Evaluate a range of intervention options—including rehabilitative exercises, dietary modifications, pharmacologic treatments, and surgical procedures—and apply decision-making frameworks to tailor care based on etiology and patient-specific factors.
