The 25th Annual La Crosse Child Maltreatment Conference will provide education for the multidisciplinary team of child protection professionals; including medical and mental health providers, law enforcement, child protection worker, educators, child/family advocates and others interested in the welfare of children. Presenters will discuss emerging best practice and address ways to collaborate with community and family to protect children and ensure justice for child victims of abuse/neglect. The April conference will focus on recognizing trauma as it presents itself in the early ages of children, canine comfort in advocacy in child maltreatment services, Wisconsin Forensic Interview Guidelines, understanding and addressing child sexual abuse disclosures, cultural humility and asking the right questions.

Scholarship Opportunity
A limited number of scholarships will be awarded to attend this course. Those interested in receiving a scholarship should provide a statement of interest describing how and why attendance at the conference would enhance current professional skills and service to children and families. Target Audience

Physicians, pediatrics, nurses, social workers, law enforcement, child advocacy center staff, child protection workers, prosecutors, forensic interviewers, medical and mental health professionals, school personnel, emergency response personnel, victim and witness advocates.

Learning Objectives

Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to: 

  • Appreciate the history of Forensic Interviewing Guidelines in the state of WI and recognize best practices for interviewing
  • Recognize ways to move beyond cultural competence to advance equity and social justice
  • Identify interviewing techniques to assist during forensic interviews
  • Learn about areas of child development, language acquisition, and memory that impact children’s narratives of sexual abuse
  • Identify Asphyxiation abuse cases and awareness in the pediatric population
