Using varied instructional formats, this course prepares primary care clinicians to manage common work-related health issues, including occupational injuries, fitness-for-duty evaluations, work restrictions, workplace exposures, pregnancy concerns, disability and medical leave, regulatory requirements, behavioral health issues, workplace conflict, and return-to-work planning.

Target Audience

This course is designed for family physicians, general internists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and nurses in primary care and family practice.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Apply a structured approach to assessing and documenting patients’ work ability for a wide range of injuries, illnesses and chronic conditions managed in primary care.
  • Develop practical, functional work restrictions or reasonable accommodations that facilitate safe work activity with optimal medical and personal outcomes for the patient.
  • Collaborate effectively with patients, employers, other health professionals, and third parties to reduce physical, financial, behavioral and psychosocial barriers to employment.
