Prevention of Medical Errors 2020 - Online

NOTE: At this time, this course is only open to Mayo Clinic Employees.

Few medical errors are attributed to faculty medical judgment.  More commonly, they are attributed to system failures inherent in healthcare delivery.  By drawing on our professional liability closed claims data compiled by The Doctors Company, we have identified common performance and diagnostic errors.  We analyzed loss prevention measure in tandem with the elements necessary to conduct a credible and thorough root cause analysis to reduce system failures, respond to sentinel events, prevent medical errors, and improve patient safety.  The Florida Board of Medicine has determined that, in addition to wrong-site surgery, the most commonly misdiagnosed conditions are: cancer-related conditions, surgery complications, respiratory-related conditions, OB/GYN-related conditions and cardiology-related conditions.  The purpose of this educational activity is to provide physicians with the most current information regarding the prevention of common performance and diagnostic errors.  This monograph is specific to Florida statutes and reflects regulations effective February 2018.

This course satisfies the Florida Board of Medicines requirement for 2 credits in Prevention of Medical Errors.
