The Psychiatry in Medical Settings course returns for its sixth year. The course will provide up to date reviews of depression, anxiety, dementia, suicide risk, substance use, and personality factors in medical-surgical patients.  Updates also will be provided on somatic symptom disorders, functional neurologic disorders, functional gastrointestinal disorders, and psycho-oncology. Each day will include a featured topic that will be covered in depth by a group of medical and behavioral specialists through well-coordinated didactic presentations, panel discussions, and interactive workshops.  

For 2017, featured topics will include:

  • Women’s Health Across the Reproductive Lifespan
  • Sexual Health- Men, Women, LGBT
  • Treatment Resistant Depression and Pharmacogenomics.

The course has been well-attended by both mental health and general medical practitioners, providing opportunities for free exchange of ideas from multiple vantage points. The 2017 course will include faculty from Mayo Clinic campuses in Minnesota, Arizona and Florida.  The course directors are Drs. Jeffrey Staab and Robert Bright, experienced clinician-educators and researchers in the field of psychosomatic medicine.

Target Audience

This course is designed for Family Physicians, General Internists, Psychiatrists, Physician Assistants, and Advance Practice Nurses.

Learning Objectives

Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Assess new concepts about the detection and treatment of somatic symptom problems along with depression and anxiety in patients seen in medical settings.
  • ​Describe evidence-based evaluation and management strategies for psychological morbidity during crucial periods in women's reproductive health -- menarche, pregnancy, and menopause.
  • Identify unique medical, sexual and psychological health needs of LGBT patients.
  • Describe current evidence on the clinical utility and cost-effectiveness of pharmacogenomic testing for managing patients with treatment resistant depression.
