Learning Objectives ~ upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize the importance of early, frequent, and clear communication about prognosis in the ICU, including potential changes in medical decision making.
  • Identify several obstacles to breaking bad news in the ICU environment, including extreme patient suffering, managing emotions, and conflict within the healthcare team.
  • Identify strategies to assist with overcoming such obstacles and enhancing communication strategies with patients and families and within the healthcare environment.
