TITLE:  Healthcare Interoperability in Emergency Medicine - A MCHS Case Study

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the emergence of clinical informatics as a new profession
  • Demonstrate how EHR workflow analysis, process redesign and quality improvement impacts ED and hospital practice
  • Differentiate market driven from retrofitted interoperability
  • Appraise current literature of EHR related patient safety events, fragmentation of care, communication gaps in referrals and consultations, ED utilization and closed loop referral systems
  • Examine KPIs to address interoperability gaps
  • Categorize interoperability standards used in referral communications
  • Formulate a framework for EHR architecture design and brokerage between healthcare organization
