The 5th Annual Forensic Science Symposium, Mayo Clinic 2019 is now open for registration

Course Director: R. Ross Reichard, M.D., Peter T. Lin, M.D.

This year’s course covers advances in forensic science and medicolegal investigation from the basics to more developed segments including, heavy metal poisoning, motor vehicle crash reconstructions, and chronic traumatic encephalopathy with additional exposure to high consequence infectious disease readiness and biologically engineered blood vessels.

Target Audience

This course is designed for:  M.D. (Medical Examiner's/Coroner); Ph.D. (Toxicologists); Death Investigators; Law Enforcement; County Attorneys; Crime Technicians.

Learning Objectives

Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Demonstrate the difference between human and animal bones
  • Identify the signs and symptoms of Silo Filler's Lung disease
  • Apply information regarding prosecution/investigation of heroin deaths to their practice
  • Identify how and why biologically engineered blood vessels are created
  • Apply lessons learned form the West Mesa Murders to their practice
  • Recognize basic pathology in a few major organs
  • Describe the 3-D printing process and recognize the benefits to forensic pathology
  • Identify the signs and symptoms of chronic traumatic encephalopathy
  • Identify the various methods of scientific identification
  • Recognize when a forensic anthropological consult could be valuable on suspicious deaths
  • Recognize the amount of work involved in the Ebola response
