This course will provide evidence-based strategies to address frequently encountered medically unexplained conditions.  We will begin with a thorough discussion of the pathophysiological process of central sensitization; this will be followed by lectures focusing on specific medically unexplained conditions and symptoms.  Each topic will utilize didactic sessions, case vignettes, clinical pearls, helpful tips, and formal Q/A sessions.  Breakfast and Break with the Experts will also be provided to allow for additional discussion. Furthermore, this course will include an optional afternoon session focusing on burnout, wellness, resilience, and mindfulness.

Target Audience

This course is intended for general internists, internal medicine subspecialists, family medicine physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and other primary healthcare professionals who practice in or have a special interest in treating medically complex patients.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Define the pathophysiological process of central sensitization
  2. Highlight the relationship between central sensitization and medically unexplained symptoms
  3. Identify treatment strategies for fibromyalgia 
  4. Identify treatment strategies for chronic fatigue syndrome
  5. Highlight the clinical approach to managing various chronic gastrointestinal symptoms
