Program for Rare and Undiagnosed Diseases Online CME Course

Course Director: Timothy B. Curry, M.D., Ph.D.

Available until August 31, 2023 - Online

The Human Genome Project —the first mapping of a person’s genetic blueprint — has unlocked mysteries of rare diseases that for ages bewildered medical science.  As many as 25 million Americans – about 1 in 13 people - suffer from a rare, undiagnosed condition.

Mayo Clinic’s rare and undiagnosed disease program has been able to make a diagnosis for nearly one-third of all patients with puzzling medical conditions, the results of which have served to treat millions of people with more common diseases. For example, today, in the United States, we treat several million Americans with statins as therapies for Coronary Artery Disease based on discoveries made studying rare types of hypercholesterolemia.

This module will distinguish the characteristics of rare and diagnosed diseases, identify reasons for why studying rare and undiagnosed diseases is important, and will present several case studies with positive patient outcomes.
