The Mayo Clinic Center for Tuberculosis acknowledges participation in planning with the Curry International Tuberculosis Center in conjunction with Pacific Island stake holders in developing this 5 day course.  Each day will start with a plenary session in the morning and has a curricular theme.

  • Day 1 - Tuberculosis and the Pacific Islands
  • Day 2 - TB Treatment
  • Day 3 - LTBI and Prevention
  • Day 4 - Laboratory Medicine and TB
  • Day 5 - TB Control and How to Stop the Stigma

During the breakout sessions, attendees will separate into 4 groups for TB training specific to their role: clinicians, nurses and outreach workers, laboratorians, and program managers.

This course is planned in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Curry International Tuberculosis Center, Heartland National TB Center, Mayo Clinic Center for Tuberculosis, Rutgers Global Tuberculosis Institute, and Southeastern National Tuberculosis Center.

Target Audience

This course is designed for Public Health & Infectious Disease MDs, RNs, Pharm.D., Public Health Professionals, and Laboratory Technologists in the US Affiliated Pacific Islands and Hawaii.

Learning Objectives

Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Apply latest advances for assessing risk, testing and treating latent TB infection to prevent development of disease
  • Utilize current recommendations for the diagnosis, treatment and management of tuberculosis disease
  • Describe how to coordinate care for patients with TB and diabetes to ensure effective management 
  • Develop approaches for addressing challenges in the management of patients with tuberculosis to achieve successful outcomes
  • Describe how primary care providers and community agencies can collaborate to prevent missed opportunities in the diagnosis and treatment of TB
  • Describe strategies for improving TB prevention and control efforts 
  • Outline principles of TB infection control and best practices for collaborating with key partners 
  • Review how the stigma of TB affects healthcare
  • Describe how to use non-stigmatizing language to break down the stigma associated with TB
