Learning objectives:
Review the underlying neuropathological basis of neurodegenerative tauopathies
Recognize that neurodegenerative tauopathies progress in defined states as best described by the Braak staging of Alzheimer's tau pathology
Recognize that neurodegenerative taupathies may progress due to the cell-to-cell spread of pathological tau
Recognize that heterogeneity in neurodegenerative tauopathies may reflect the spread of different strains of pathologic tau
Recognize that neurodegenerative tauopathies are not infectious like prion disorders because pathological tau strains do not meet Prusiner's definition of prions, i.e. proteinacious infectious particles
