Mayo Clinic speech pathologists work in close collaboration with multiple departments to complete comprehensive evaluations of complex dysphagia patients in inpatient and outpatient settings. The Dysphagia Evaluation and Treatment: A Multidisciplinary Model course is unique and shares with learners Mayo’s holistic approach on how to diagnose and manage this complex patient. It is designed with intermediate to advanced content for the professional in speech and language pathology, radiology, ENT, neurology, and gastroenterology.

Target Audience

This course is designed for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, and speech language pathologists in the areas of speech pathology, ENT, radiology, neurology and gastroenterology.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize when additional evaluation is needed by another discipline to assist in diagnosis of the swallowing disorder.
  • Examine dysphagia evaluation in a variety of complex patient populations in collaboration with other members of the medical team.
  • Identify the range of management techniques for dysphagia associated with a variety of etiologies.

Faculty MemberBiography
Semirra L. Bayan, M.D.Dr. Semirra (Sami) Bayan is an Otolaryngologist with subspecialty training in Laryngeal Surgery and Voice Disorders. As part of the Mayo Clinic Voice Center, Dr. Bayan understands that everyone's voice is important and strives to provide focused, personalized care to every patient.Her clinical focus includes comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for professional and non-professional voice users in close coordination with speech and language pathologists specializing in the treatment of voice disorders. Minimally invasive KTP laser surgery for early vocal fold cancers and vocal cord dysplasia. In office procedures for vocal cord paralysis, recurrent vocal cord dysplasia and recurrent vocal cord papilloma. State-of-the-art surgical treatment for benign voice and airway disorders. In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Bayan is active in research and education providing mentorship to residents and fellows. 
R. Paul Boesch, D.O.Paul Boesch is an Associate Professor at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and currently the Chair of the Division of Pediatric Pulmonology, Director of the Pediatric Aerodigestive Program, a founding member of the Aerodigestive Research Collaborative, and a founder and former President of the Aerodigestive Society. His areas of focus are pediatric airway disorders and interventional bronchoscopy, pediatric aerodigestive disorders and dysphagia, and chronic respiratory failure. 
Ellen J. Case, M.S.W.Ellen Case received her bachelor’s degree in social work at the College of St. Scholastica and her master’s degree in clinical social work from the University of St. Thomas.  She was a clinical social worker for over thirty years at Mayo Clinic in a variety of adult and pediatric practices.  She is currently a Program Manager and an Allied Health Ethics Consultant in the Office of Clinical Ethics. 
Claudia Z. Chou, M.D.Claudia Chou, MD is an Assistant Professor of Neurology and a Palliative Care Consultant in the Division of Community Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care (CIMGP) at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She completed her residency in Neurology and fellowship in Movement Disorders at Mayo Clinic and a fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine (HPM) at the Ohio State University. Currently, she serves as associate program director for the HPM fellowship at Mayo in Rochester. Her interests are developing models of palliative care delivery in neurology and education about palliative care for patients with neurologic disease.  
Chamil C. Codipilly, M.D.Chamil Codipilly, M.D. is a Gastroenterologist in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Mayo Clinic Rochester in Rochester, MN. Chamil is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the College of Medicine. He has a BS from the City College of New York in Biomedical Sciences and received his MD from Stony Brook University School of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency, gastroenterology fellowship, and sub-specialty fellowship training in esophageal diseases at the Mayo Clinic Rochester. His clinical interests include esophageal disorders, particularly emphasizing the endoscopic management of dysplastic Barrett’s esophagus, as well as studying the role of AI in prognostication of outcomes in eosinophilic esophagitis. 
Benjamin D. Elder, M.D., Ph.D.Benjamin Elder, MD/PhD is a Professor of Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, and Biomedical Engineering at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where he also serves at the associate program director for the neurosurgery residency program. He obtained B.S. and M.S. degrees in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale University, a Ph.D. in Bioengineering from Rice University, and his M.D. at Baylor College of Medicine in the combined M.D./Ph.D. program. He completed his neurosurgery residency training at Johns Hopkins, including an in folded neurosurgery complex spine fellowship, and additional postgraduate fellowship training in orthopedic spinal deformity surgery at Johns Hopkins. His clinical practice focuses on adult spinal deformity and complex spine surgery, as well as idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus. He has an active clinical research program focused on bone health optimization and treatment of osteoporosis for spinal pathologies as well as on optimizing the biomechanics of spinopelvic reconstruction in spinal deformity patients, with over 200 peer-reviewed publications and over 100 invited and oral presentations at national and international meetings. Additionally, he runs a basic science research lab focused on bone and cartilage tissue engineering approaches for the spine and serves as Co-Principal Investigator on two R01 grants and site Principal Investigator on two additional R01 grants. 
Kristina T. Flicek, M.D.Kristina Flicek, MD is a physician in the Abdominal Radiology Department at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. She is a(n) Assistant Professor in the College of Medicine. She graduated medical school from the University of Arizona and completed diagnostic radiology residency at Creighton University in Phoenix, AZ. Additionally she completed a Body Imaging Fellowship at Mayo Clinic Arizona. Clinical interests include abdominal imaging using fluoroscopy, CT and MRI.   
Rachael M. Guenzel, APRN, C.N.P., D.N.P.Rachael Guenzel is a Nurse Practitioner in the Department of Radiation Oncology who specializes in head and neck and hematological malignancies at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.  She is also a Mayo Clinic Assistant Professor in Radiation Oncology.  Ms. Guenzel received her Bachelor of Science Nursing Education through College of Saint Benedict/St. John’s University in May 2009.  She achieved her Family Nurse Practitioner degree through Viterbo University In May 2017.  She enjoys precepting students and new employees and served as adjunct faculty for Nurse Practitioner students through Viterbo University.  In collaboration with her colleagues, she serves as a program director for the Global Bridges Oncology Nursing Seminar. Through this initiative, they facilitate virtual lectures for oncology providers across Africa and have organized specialized oncology workshops in Nairobi and Kumasi. Additionally, her team has hosted African nurses for two-week observer ships at their clinic in Minnesota, further enhancing professional development and knowledge exchange in the field of oncology nursing.  She also enjoys research and has led a quality improvement project to improve PM&R referral rates for head and neck cancer patients to improve patient outcomes. 
Pua E. Hopson, D.O.Puanani Hopson, DO is a Consultant in the Pediatric Gastroenterology and Hepatology Department at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. She is an Assistant Professor in the College of Medicine. Her clinical interests include: Aerodigestive disorders, GERD, Eosinophlic Esophagitis (EoE). Dr. Hopson is the director of the Pediatric EoE Multidiciplinary Clinic and the Pediatric Endoscopy Practice. She is actively involved in the Pediatric Aerodigestive Multidiciplinary Clinic.  Beyond her clinical roles, she is actively involved in the Pediatric GI Fellowship and Pediatric Residency training programs, where she enjoys sharing her knowledge and expertise with trainees. Dr. Hopson is a dedicated researcher, focusing on aerodigestive and esophageal disorders, particularly EoE and GERD. 
Emily A. Hosfield, M.S., CCC-SLP, BCS-SEmily Hosfield is a Speech-Language Pathologist in the Department of Neurology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. She is an Instructor in the College of Medicine and a board-certified swallowing specialist (BCS-S). Her clinical and research interests focus on the evaluation and management of adult and pediatric dysphagia. 
Anne E. Kulinski, M.S., CCC-SLP, BCS-SAnne Kulinski, MS, CCC-SLP, BCS-S is a Speech-Language Pathologist in the Department of Neurology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Anne is an instructor in the College of Medicine and serves as the acute dysphagia lead clinician. She earned her master’s degree in Speech Pathology at the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire. Clinical interests include evaluating and treating dysphagia in adult populations and promoting interdisciplinary care for patients with dysphagia.  
Eliot J. Martin, P.A.-C.Eliot J. Martin, PA-C is a Physician Assistant in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Mayo Clinic Rochester. Eliot is an Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology in the College of Medicine. He received his BA in Biology from Indiana University and attended Long Island University School of Health Sciences where he received his BS in Physician Assistant Studies. Eliot has been a member of the Mayo Clinic staff and the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery since 2004.  He has been an NP/PA Otolaryngology Clinical Preceptor for the Mayo School of Health Sciences since July-2010 and served as the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery APP supervisor from 2011 – 2024. His primary clinical interests include the comprehensive management of oropharynx cancer, salivary gland neoplasms, and all facets of head and neck reconstruction 
Julia K. Meverden, M.S., CCC-SLPJulia Meverden, M.S., CCC-SLP is a speech language pathologist in the Department of Neurology at Mayo Clinic Rochester in Rochester, MN. She is the assistant supervisor of the division of speech pathology and an Instructor in Neurology. Julia has a master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology and her clinical interests include dysphagia evaluation and treatment in the inpatient and outpatient setting. 
Margherita Milone, M.D., Ph.D.Margherita Milone, MD, PhD is a neurologist with expertise in neuromuscular disorders in the Department of Neurology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. She is a professor of Neurology and serves as director of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) care center and muscle pathology laboratory. Her research interests focus on inherited and acquired muscle disorders. 
Avinash K. Nehra, M.D.

Avinash Nehra, M.D. is a Consultant in the Department of Radiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Dr. Nehra is an Assistant Professor of Radiology in the College of Medicine. Dr. Nehra has a Bachelor of Science and completed medical school from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Dr. Nehra works in the Abdominal and Hospital/Emergency Medicine Divisions of Radiology and clinical interests include imaging of gastrointestinal disorders as well as photon-counting CT.  

Elizabeth M. Olsen, APRN, C.N.P., M.S.N.

Elizabeth Olsen, APRN, CNP is a Nurse Practitioner in the Heart and Lung Transplant/ Cardiovascular Surgery Department at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Elizabeth is a(n) Instructor in Surgery in the College of Medicine. She has a Master of Science in Nursing and a degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner from Bradley University.  Elizabeth is currently the supervisor for the heart/lung transplant APP group under the CV Surgery division.  She is an active committee member for the transplant clinical practice committee.  She also serves on as a member of the Transplant Committee in the Association of Pulmonary Advanced Practice Providers (APAPP).  Clinical interests include a passion for educating others about heart and lung transplant patients and their unique needs.   

Hannah C. Patten, CCC-SLPHannah Patten is a speech language pathologist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota working in acute care and as part of the Aerodigestive Clinic. She is involved in research projects examining the relationship between oropharyngeal dysphagia and aspiration related lung disease. Her clinical interests include dysphagia across the lifespan, dysphagia evaluation and treatment in the ICU, pediatric and neonatal feeding and swallowing dysfunction, and tracheostomy and ventilator dependence. She is also a Certified Brain Injury Specialist.  
Kiersten A. Pope, M.S., CCC-SLPKiersten Pope, MS, CCC-SLP is a Speech Language Pathologist at Saint Marys Hospital campus of Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Kiersten has a Master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology from Utah State University and a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Brigham Young University. She completed a clinical fellowship with the Speech Language Pathology team at Mayo Clinic from 2019-2020. Her clinical interests include communication and swallow rehabilitation with adults with acquired brain injuries including stroke, TBI, and post-neurosurgery. 
Karthik Ravi, M.D.Dr. Ravi is a physician specializing in gastroenterology with subspecialty certification in esophagology. Areas of clinical expertise include Achalasia; Eosinophilic Esophagitis; GERD and Esophageal Spasms. In addition to his clinical activities, Dr. Ravi is active in research and education, providing mentorship to residents and subspecialty fellows. He is currently the Director of the Esophageal Motility Lab and Practice Chair in Gastroenterology, Mayo Clinic Rochester. Dr. Ravi is a highly sought after speaker and has spoken on topics related to dysphagia, eosinophilic esophagitis, and esophageal motility in venues across the country and abroad.  
Amy Scibona, M.S., CCC-SLPAmy is a Speech-Language Pathologist in the Division of Speech-Language Pathology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She has a Master of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Fontbonne University in St. Louis. She evaluates and treats dysphagia in the acute and outpatient practices, with a special interest in head and neck cancer and critical care dysphagia management. 
Catherine A. Shonley, M.A., CCC-SLPCatherine A. Shonley, MA, CCC-SLP, is an Allied Health Speech-Language Pathologist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She earned her BA in communication sciences and disorders from Northwestern University followed by her MA in speech-language-hearing sciences from The University of Minnesota. She works primarily with adults in the inpatient and outpatient settings with a focus on assessing and treating dysphagia arising from neurologic injury and illness, head and neck cancer, and other etiologies.   
Eric J. Sorenson, M.D.

Dr. Eric Sorenson is a neuromuscular physician in the department of neurology at the Mayo Clinic Rochester. Dr. Sorenson is a Professor of Neurology in the College of Medicine. He received his MD from Mayo Medical School and then completed his residency in Neurology at Mayo Rochester.  He completed his neuromuscular fellowship at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, MI.   His clinical and research interests include electromyography and the neuromuscular diseases with a focus on the diagnosis, epidemiology and treatment of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. 

Julie A. Stierwalt, Ph.D.Julie A.G. Stierwalt, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, FASHA is a Consultant in the Division of Speech Pathology, Department of Neurology, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN and an Associate Professor of Speech Pathology in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.  Her doctoral training was at the University of Iowa.  Following that training she worked in academia until she joined Mayo Clinic in 2015. She currently serves to differentially diagnose individuals with dysphagia, dysarthria, aphasia and cognitive-communication impairments in an outpatient clinic, outpatient specialty clinics, and acute care settings. Her clinical interests are to provide quality diagnostic services and training in methods for optimizing dysphagia and communication symptomatology.  
Derek W. Stitt, M.D.Consultant and Assistant Professor in the Mayo Clinic Department Neurology Division of Education. His primary focus is on clinical education with additional interest in neurotoxicology. He has served as the attending physician on the general neurology hospital service for 12 weeks per year for the last 6 years. He originated in Kentucky until moving to Rochester for neurology residency training at Mayo.  
Nathan M. Thornton, APRN, C.N.P., D.N.P.Nathan is a Nurse Practitioner in the Medical ICU and Respiratory Care Unit at Mayo Clinic Rochester. He is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and completed his Doctorate of Nursing Practice – Adult Gerontology Acute Care NP from Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Oregon. He has clinical interests in sepsis, mechanical ventilation and ventilator weaning, and ICU liberation.  
Nicole C. Wakeman, M.A., CCC-SLP

Nicole Wakeman, M.A., CCC-SLP is a speech language pathologist in the Department of Neurology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. She has a master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology from the University of Northern Iowa. Clinical interests include dysphagia management in the critical care setting, disorders of consciousness, and staff education and training on supported conversation techniques for aphasia.  

Josh P. Wiedermann, M.D.Josh Wiedermann MD, MGSC, FACS is the division chair of pediatric otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at Mayo Clinic Rochester. He is an associate professor, and his clinical focuses include airway reconstruction and other aerodigestive diseases. He is a global surgeon and travels multiple times a year to low- and middle-income countries to teach the management of similar pathology.
