Learning Objectives: 

Management of Neurological Complications in Acute Liver Failure

  • Review the pathophysiology of cerebral edema in acute liver failure (ALF).
  • Examine the different modalities for monitoring intracranial pressure (ICP) in ALF.
  • Formulate a plan for the management of cerebral edema and increased ICP in ALF.

Brain Death on ECMO

  • Summarize death and brain death definitions
  • Review typical brain death checklist with apnea testing
  • Contrast with possible brain death on ECMO, specifically VA ECMO
  • Review proposed apnea testing alternatives with ECMO
  • Appraise ancillary tests and their role in brain death on ECMO
