Dr. William P. Cheshire is a Professor of Neurology in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and a past president of the staff of Mayo Clinic in Florida. He joined the Mayo Clinic staff in 1992 and is a Consultant in the Department of Neurology.
He received his A.B. in biochemical sciences from Princeton University, his M.D. from West Virginia University, and his M.A. in bioethics from Trinity International University. Following an internship in Internal Medicine at West Virginia University, he completed a Neurology residency and Pain fellowship at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Dr. Cheshire is a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and of the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties with certifications in Neurology and Autonomic Disorders. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology and the American Neurological Association, chair of the Grievance Committee of the American Academy of Neurology, a past chair of the Autonomic Disorders Section of the American Academy of Neurology, and president-elect of the American Autonomic Society. He serves on the editorial boards of Autonomic Neuroscience and Parkinsonism & Related Disorders. Currently at Mayo Clinic in Florida he chairs the Ethics Committee and leads the Program in Professionalism & Values. At the Enterprise level he is vice chair of Ethics Education and chair of the ethics Knowledge Content Board for AskMayoExpert. Dr. Cheshire has over 200 publications, book chapters, and abstracts related to his fields of interest.
