Exceptional, Patient Centered Critical Care: The CERTAIN Approach Virtual Simulation Workshop
Course Directors: Alexander Niven, M.D., Ognjen Gajic, M.D., Yue Dong, M.D.
April 11, 2022 - Livestream
Consistent, patient-centered care and delivery of evidence-based best practices can be challenging in the complex, dynamic critical care setting. The CERTAIN (Checklist for Early Recognition and Treatment of Acute Illness and iNjury) is a quality improvement program that offers a systematic approach to perform an initial assessment and ongoing evidence-based management of the critically ill or injured patient.
Mayo Clinic CERTAIN team lead by Drs. Alexander Niven, Yue Dong, Ognjen Gajic, is the internationally renowned critical care research and implementation science team. In the last ten years, the CERTAIN team has successfully designed, developed, and implemented the CERTAIN program in a network of 34 hospitals worldwide (www.icertain.org) using bedside decision support tools and web-based remote simulation and coaching. A large quality improvement research study showed CERTAIN implementation was feasible and associated with better adherence to the best practice of critical care processes, shorter ICU and hospital lengths of stay, decreased complications, and lower ICU and hospital mortality.
With ten years of experience to design, develop and implement innovative solutions to transform ICU practices in hospitals worldwide, built on the strong preliminary data and state-of-the-art implementation science, a multimodal platform consisting of online curriculum, simulation workshop, and video-enabled in-situ case-based coaching and quality improvement, CERTAIN Programs have the potential to transform ICU practice globally by allowing the learning and implementation to occur over time in the local ICU setting.
