This live and livestream course offers state-of-the-art discussion and instruction on practical, yet comprehensive evaluation and management of challenging laryngeal-related disorders and corresponding rehabilitation techniques. The course will provide a multidisciplinary approach to a wide variety of voice and swallowing topics, surgical procedures, cancer management, airway issues, techniques for post-surgical swallow rehabilitation, and post-laryngectomy voice restoration. Optional half-day workshops (separate registration): include Advanced laryngectomy rehabilitation: TEP management; Choices for voices: Evaluation and treatment directions; and Office-based laryngology procedures: Hands-on lab. Course format includes: evidence-based lectures, multidisciplinary panel discussions with case presentations and Q & A, live demonstrations, and interaction with Mayo Clinic and guest faculty.
Target Audience
This course is designed for physicians, surgeons, mid-level healthcare providers, otolaryngology residents, and (SLPs) speech - language pathologists in the United States, Mexico and Europe. Specialties include: general surgery, otorhinolaryngology, internal medicine, speech-language pathology, neurology, gerontology and radiation oncology.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Identify functional disorders of the larynx that account for frequently misdiagnosed etiologies of voice and swallowing disorders.
- Manage head and neck cancer-related swallowing disorders that can be immediately implemented into practice.
- Explain various pediatric voice disorders and treatment options.
- Differentiate diagnostic characteristics among muscle tension dysphonia, vocal tremor, and spasmodic dysphonia, for optimal treatment.
- Describe variables in treatment of muscle tension dysphonia in singers.
Following attendance at each respective workshop, participants should be able to:
Advanced Laryngectomy Rehabilitation: Hands-on TEP Management
- Assess voice prostheses in a laryngectomee and evaluate methods for sizing and techniques for placement.
- Determine the proper heat and moisture exchange system for laryngectomees and instruct the patient on placement and management.
Choices for Voices: Evaluation and treatment directions
- Perform low-cost, yet comprehensive, acoustic and aerodynamic voice assessment.
Office-Based Laryngology Procedures: Hands-on Lab
- Evaluate optimal techniques for performing a variety of office-based procedures.
- Identify methods and tools used to perform office-based procedures.
- Assess when to use of an office-based procedure vs. surgery.
