This live and livestream course offers state-of-the-art discussion and instruction on practical, yet comprehensive evaluation and management of challenging laryngeal-related disorders and corresponding rehabilitation techniques. The course will provide a multidisciplinary approach to a wide variety of voice and swallowing topics, surgical procedures, cancer management, airway issues, techniques for post-surgical swallow rehabilitation, and post-laryngectomy voice restoration. Optional half-day workshops (separate registration): include Advanced laryngectomy rehabilitation: TEP management; Choices for voices: Evaluation and treatment directions; and Office-based laryngology procedures: Hands-on lab. Course format includes: evidence-based lectures, multidisciplinary panel discussions with case presentations and Q & A, live demonstrations, and interaction with Mayo Clinic and guest faculty.

LIVE (in-person) attendees must comply with all live course requirements and guidelines and applicable state and local COVID-19 travel restrictions, guidance and resources.

Target Audience

This course is designed for physicians, surgeons, mid-level healthcare providers, otolaryngology residents, and (SLPs) speech - language pathologists in the United States, Mexico and Europe. Specialties include: general surgery, otorhinolaryngology, internal medicine, speech-language pathology, neurology, gerontology and radiation oncology.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify functional disorders of the larynx that account for frequently misdiagnosed etiologies of voice and swallowing disorders.
  • Manage head and neck cancer-related swallowing disorders that can be immediately implemented into practice.
  • Explain various pediatric voice disorders and treatment options.
  • Differentiate diagnostic characteristics among muscle tension dysphonia, vocal tremor, and spasmodic dysphonia, for optimal treatment.
  • Describe variables in treatment of muscle tension dysphonia in singers.

Following attendance at each respective workshop, participants should be able to:

Advanced Laryngectomy Rehabilitation: Hands-on TEP Management

  • Assess voice prostheses in a laryngectomee and evaluate methods for sizing and techniques for placement.
  • Determine the proper heat and moisture exchange system for laryngectomees and instruct the patient on placement and management.

Choices for Voices: Evaluation and treatment directions

  • Perform low-cost, yet comprehensive, acoustic and aerodynamic voice assessment.

Office-Based Laryngology Procedures: Hands-on Lab

  • Evaluate optimal techniques for performing a variety of office-based procedures.
  • Identify methods and tools used to perform office-based procedures.
  • Assess when to use of an office-based procedure vs. surgery.

Hotel rooms near Mayo Clinic Hospital are limited. You are urged to make reservations early. We have reserved a small room block of rooms at the Residence Inn Desert View Phoenix at Mayo Clinic. The room rate is $239/night, plus applicable state and local taxes (currently 12.57%).

This rate is available until March 7, 2022 or until the room block fills. The hotel is located on the Mayo Clinic Phoenix campus, but is not considered within walking distance of the ASU Health Futures Center. (Shuttle service from the hotel to the ASU Health Futures Center will be available.)

FacultyBiography
David G. Lott, M.D.David G. Lott, M.D. holds the academic rank of Professor of Otolaryngology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. He is a consultant in the Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery and serves as the Chair of the Division of Laryngology at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona. His practice includes voice and swallowing restoration, laryngeal cancer, and laryngotracheal reconstruction. He is the Associate Director of the Center for Regenerative Medicine, Arizona Campus and serves as faculty for both the Clinical & Translational Science and Regenerative Sciences tracks within the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. In addition, he is the Director of the Head and Neck Regenerative Medicine Lab at Mayo Clinic. The primary goal of the lab is to establish safe and effective clinical translation of regenerative medicine technology. The efforts of his FDA-approved human clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy of the tissue-engineered technologies has established the world’s first UNOS-approved Larynx and Trachea Transplantation Program.
Dr. Lott received his M.D. degree at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and completed a residency in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Head and Neck Institute. He received further fellowship training in Laryngeal Surgery and Professional Voice at Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts General Hospital. In addition, he has authored many publications on laryngeal regenerative techniques, including invited manuscripts on laryngeal transplantation and book chapters on laryngeal transplantation and larynx bioengineering. And he has co-authored the book, “Contemporary Transoral Surgery for Primary Head and Neck Cancer”.
Dr. Lott had been involved with both local and national organizations and is an active member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, Triological Society, American Bronchoesophageal Society, and American Laryngological Society.
William (Will) E. Karle, M.D.Dr. Karle is a Laryngologist and an Assistant Professor in the Mayo School of Medicine. He is a Senior Associate Consultant at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona and also holds the position of Associate Program Director for their Otolaryngology Residency Program. He completed his residency in Otolaryngology at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai and then continued his education by completing a fellowship in Laryngology at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). His practice involves all aspects of care within the field of Laryngology including professional voice, swallowing, airway, and laryngeal cancer.
Sara A. Charney M.S., CCC-SLPSara A. Charney is a speech-language pathologist at Mayo Clinic Arizona. Sara is an NCVS-trained vocologist who specializes in the professional and singing voice. Her other clinical interests include the management of upper airway disorders (chronic cough and inducible laryngeal obstruction) and swallowing and voice disorders related to head and neck cancer. Sara is the director of Mayo Clinic Laryngology’s social media and is also the director of the student observership program. Dedicated to community outreach, she co-founded and co-hosts “Out of the Voicebox”, a podcast aimed to educate graduate students, singers, and individuals in related fields on a wide range of voice-related topics. Sara has also been featured on several national platforms (e.g., ABC News Live) to discuss the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the field of speech-language pathology. Her research interests have focused on the investigation of rare clinical voice diagnoses, interdisciplinary education, and novel vocal therapeutic techniques.
Heather M. Clark, Ph.D.Dr. Heather Clark is a Chair of Speech Pathology in the Department of Neurology and Associate Professor in the College of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She is board-certified by the Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences and is a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Her clinical responsibilities include differential diagnosis of communication and swallowing disorders in adults and children. Over the past 20 years, her research has included a review of neuromuscular treatments, drawing heavily from the literature of related disciplines, including exercise physiology and physical rehabilitation. Through review of the neuromuscular physiology of the speech and swallowing musculature, Dr. Clark continues to explore the application of neuromuscular treatments to dysarthria and neurogenic dysphagia. She serves as co-investigator in several projects examining the nature of speech, language, and swallowing impairment in degenerative neurologic disease.
Dr. Clark has served as a topic chair for the ASHA convention, program chair of the Conference on Motor Speech, and chair of the fall conference of the North Carolina Speech Language Hearing Association.
Stephanie R. Cotton (Zacharias), Ph.D., CCC-SLPStephanie RC Zacharias, PhD, CCC-SLP is a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist and is currently a Research Scientist at Mayo Clinic Arizona in Dr. David Lott’s Head and Neck Regenerative Medicine Lab. Dr. Zacharias is concurrently building a Pediatric Voice Clinic at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Clinical and Research interests include: assessment, treatment, and voice outcomes in pediatric voice and use of high-speed video. She has published and presented nationally and internationally on various topics of pediatric voice and voice disorders. 
Lisa R. Crujido, MS, CCC-SLPLisa Crujido, MS CCC, is a speech pathologist in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at Mayo Clinic Arizona.  Her clinical specialties include the diagnosis and treatment of voice and swallowing disorders in head and neck cancer as well as the general voice disordered population. Ms. Crujido completed her graduate study at Illinois State University.  Post-graduate study includes participation in research in the Laryngeal and Speech Section of the NINDS of the National Institutes of Health, collaborative research on the effects of surface electrical stimulation and exercise in head and neck cancer patients with dysphagia following radiation therapy, and collaboration with the Dystonia Coalition on the development of a rating system and assessment tool for the diagnosis of spasmodic dysphonia.  She is a co-author on a number of publications that include treatment outcomes using radiotherapy for head and neck cancer, the effects of e-stim and exercise in chronic pharyngeal dysphagia, and treatment programs for total laryngectomees. She is a contributor to the text “Laryngeal Cancer: An Interdisciplinary Resource for Practitioners”, authoring a chapter on airway and respiratory challenges in larynx cancer.   When not working, you will likely find her on a bicycle.       
Jessica W. Gregor, M.S., CCC-SLP, BCS-SJessica Wind Gregor is a speech-language pathologist at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona. She is a board-certified specialist in swallowing and swallowing disorders in adults, particularly the oncologic population. Over the past decade, Jessica has worked at both VA and private sector health systems. She has established multidisciplinary programs for head/neck cancer patients with ENT and Radiation Oncology and regularly collaborates with ENTs and Gastroenterologists for comprehensive swallow diagnostics and intervention for optimal patient care. Her research interests are the oropharyngeal and esophageal interplay as well as reflux-related changes in the anatomy and physiology of swallowing.
Stacy L. Holyfield, M.S., CCC-SLPStacy Holyfield is a Speech-Language Pathologist with expertise in voice disorders and rehabilitation across the spectrum of voice impairment, including treatment of singing, performance and professional voice. She practices clinically on an interdisciplinary team for evaluation and treatment of voice, swallowing, and upper airway disorders in the Department of Otolaryngology, Mayo Clinic Arizona. Stacy has a B.A. in Music with an Emphasis in Vocal Performance and an M.S. in Clinical Speech-Language Pathology from Northern Arizona University. She also earned post-graduate certification in Vocology through the National Center for Voice and Speech at the University of Utah. Her clinical and academic interests include understanding laryngeal physiology and pathophysiology, and how these investigations inform and enhance clinical and behavioral treatment of voice.  
Blake Simpson, M.D.Dr. Simpson is Professor and Director of the Division of Laryngology at UAB. He is also the Co-Director of the UAB Voice Center. He joined the faculty at UAB in 2020 after a 23-year career in the Department of Otolaryngology at UT Health San Antonio.  Dr. Simpson specializes exclusively in the treatment of patients with voice and upper airway disorders and has published extensively in the area of laryngology and airway disease, co-authoring the definitive textbook on the surgical treatment of laryngotracheal disorders, Operative Techniques in Laryngology, which has subsequently been translated into Spanish and Chinese. Dr. Simpson has developed several innovative techniques that have been adopted widely within the field of Laryngology, including Botox injections into the false vocal cords for Spasmodic Dysphonia/Vocal Tremor, and the Superior Laryngeal Nerve Block, a new treatment for chronic cough. He is a founding member of the Laryngeal Education Foundation and is the past president for the American Laryngological Association. He has been nationally selected by his peers as a “Best Doctor” for the past 15 years and is in the “Super Doctors Hall of Fame”
Sharon H. Gnagi, M.D.Dr. Gnagi treats all aspects of pediatric ENT, with a special interest in head and neck tumors and congenital masses and the surgical treatment of obstructive sleep apnea.  She has advanced training in management of cleft lip and palate and enjoys helping children better communicate by treating speech disorders such as velopharyngeal insufficiency and pathology affecting children’s voices.  She serves as a member of the aerodigestive team at Phoenix Children’s, treating children with dysphagia, aspiration, airway anomalies, and children in need of airway reconstruction.  She also serves on the tracheostomy quality board to improve the care of patients with tracheostomies at Phoenix Children’s Hospital.
Sara G. Davis M.A., CCC-SLPSara Davis is a nationally accredited and state licensed speech pathologist specializing in voice with years of experience in the otolaryngology clinic setting. She brings a high level of energy, passion, and training to the patients she treats. She has special interests in voice, upper airway, and swallowing disorders and is competent in performing rigid and flexible videostroboscopy, FEES, and MBS. Sara especially enjoys working with occupational voice users and loves to teach others about "taking care of their instrument". In addition to working in the medical/clinic setting, Sara is a fitness instructor (Level II certified in Lagree fitness), former barre instructor, and former master instructor for indoor cycling. She is also a frequent public speaker and has years of experience in the fitness and sports/media industries. She founded VOXFIT® as a result of her first research study and sees clients within this small business individually and within group/studio/company seminars. Sara has published research and presented at national conferences. She loves continuing education, learning (and sharing) new research about all things speech pathology related (especially voice!), and guiding others towards vocal fitness. Sara works at Banner University Medical Center outpatient clinic in Phoenix.
