Oncology Nursing Core Curriculum: Cancer Concepts I

This course focuses on the care of patients with cancer. Learners will explore cancer risk factors and diagnostic procedures, along with various treatment modalities such as chemotherapy and radiation. This course focuses on breast, prostate, colon/rectal, and lung cancers, covering their risk factors, symptoms, and screening standards. Additionally, the course will address the pathophysiology of malignant pleural effusions and nursing considerations for PleurX catheter management. Learners will also identify potential adverse effects of cancer treatments and learn effective nursing interventions to manage these complications
Target Audience
This CNE course is designed for nurses in hematology/oncology or who are interested in the specialty.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe cancer risk factors and diagnosis
- Describe the cancer treatment modalities and goals of treatment for the oncology/hematology patients
- Identify the risk factors, symptoms, screening and treatment for breast cancer, prostate, colon/rectal and lung cancers
- Review pathophysiology of malignant pleural effusions and nursing considerations for the PleurX catheters
- Identify possible adverse effects of can treatment and nursing considerations
