The symposium provides an overview of neurological and neurosurgical medical emergencies first responders (EMS/FD) and healthcare professionals may encounter. Lectures cover the pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, and complications associated with each topic. Symposium topics range from acute ischemic stroke with discussions on thrombolysis, large vessel occlusion (LVO) stroke triage, and LVO stroke management, to conditions like status epilepticus, acute monocular blindness, amaurosis, CRAO, aneurysmal/AVM management, acute intracranial hemorrhage, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, neuroinvasive diseases such as West Nile Virus, the impact of stroke on patients and families, fundamentals of neuroimaging, and strategies for localizing stroke management.
Target Audience
This symposium is designed for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, first responders and any allied health professionals practicing in neurology, emergency medicine, and primary care.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Identify symptoms indicative of potential neurological emergencies in diverse settings.
- Review most recent clinical practice guidelines related to neurological emergency management.
- Identify skills to utilize fundamental neuroanatomy principles to pinpoint lesions through interpretation of physical examination findings.
- Discuss the pre-hospital and emergency department triage management of acute stroke.
