The Mayo Clinic Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Board Review is designed for candidates preparing for certifying and maintenance of certification examinations in physical medicine and rehabilitation. This online content is intended to provide a comprehensive review of the topic areas and facilitate additional study if needed.   

Faculty:

Dr. Gay is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He is the Co-Director of the Mayo Rehabilitation Medicine Research Center and Vice Chair of the Mayo Midwest Spine Practice. 

His clinical interests include the evaluation and treatment of complex spine disorders.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the theoretical pathophysiology of myofascial trigger points according to Simons 
  • Identify the two major categories of myopathies and the principles of evaluation and rehabilitation management of myopathies
  • Recognize the general characteristics of motor neuron diseases and the principles of treatment
  • Discuss the differences between mononeuropathy and polyneuropathy and the general approach to examination and diagnosis for each condition
  • List the common features of AIDP and discuss the general principles of rehabilitation management
  • Understand the common causes of brachial plexopathy and lumbosacral plexopathy and discuss the approach to management for each condition
