Course Description

This course provides a focus on ethical issues in transplant practice centered around real-world cases and includes multi-disciplinary panel discussions. Topics covered include ethical issues surrounding living donation, high-risk recipients, hand and face transplantation, paired donor exchanges, and ventricular assist devices. There is ample time after each presentation for questions and group discussion. The course is appropriate for participants interested in clinical ethics and health care providers involved in transplantation, as well as providers from practices that interface with transplant centers such as nephrology & dialysis, cardiology, critical care, hepatology, and pulmonology.

Course Objectives

Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

• Apply informed ethical principles to complex clinical scenarios involving human organ donation and transplantation
• Contribute to a multidisciplinary team that is capable of achieving consensus on bioethical controversies that arise in clinical transplantation
• Identify and discuss the major topics of ethical debate that exist in the field of human organ donation and transplantation
• Analyze the ethical and legal concepts that shape the current allocation systems for different solid organ transplants from deceased donors in the USA
