LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. List the Novel or Target-Specific Anticoagulants and discuss how they work. Compare and contrast to other classes of anticoagulants including the vitamin K antagonists (VKA) and the low-molecular weight heparins (LMWH).
2. Review the relevant clinical trials of the NOAC’s and their outcomes. Be able to state the statistically significant findings.
3. Choose the “best” anticoagulant(s) for the patient. Discuss when and what type of monitoring is needed for patients.
4. List the reversal agents for the NOAC’s and review how they work.
5. Discuss the resources for periprocedural recommendations for NOAC’s. Become familiar with the ACCP (CHEST) Guidelines and Mayo Clinic Pharmacy guidelines. Mayo Clinic APPs for periprocedural anticoagulation will be reviewed.
