Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Define key concepts related to spirituality in healthcare, including spirituality, religion, spiritual needs, and spiritual care.

  • Summarize current evidence on the relationship between spirituality/religiosity and health outcomes, including quality of life and end-of-life care.

  • Recognize how spiritual beliefs can influence medical decision-making, including code status and preferences for life-sustaining treatment.

  • Recognize questions that are helpful in assessing spiritual needs using patient-centered approaches and structured assessment tools

  • Identify clinical scenarios in which referral to chaplaincy or spiritual care is appropriate.
