The Mayo Clinic Critical Care Review for the NP and PA procedural skills workshop will take place in the Mayo Clinic Multidisciplinary Simulation Center and will include hands-on simulation training in central venous access, basic airway techniques including intubation and bronchoscopy, and advanced airway techniques including tracheotomy and cricothyrotomy. The critical care ultrasound workshop focuses on point of care ultrasonography including limited bedside echocardiography, focused assessment with sonography in trauma (FAST) exam, deep venous thrombosis (DVT) screening, and lung ultrasonography. Both workshops are led by Mayo Clinic leaders in critical care medicine and are valuable experiences for novice and experienced learners.

As part of the Mayo Clinic Critical Care Review for the Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant 2020 course, we will host a poster session for presentation of original research dedicated to the field of critical care medicine. The submission deadline for abstracts is February 14, 2020. Attendees are invited to submit a research abstract summarizing original clinical research, basic research work, or case presentations. Target Audience

This course is designed for nurse practitioners, physician assistants, hospital and intensive care physicians and residents, registered nurses, allied health professionals, respiratory therapists, and NP/PA students in acute care.

Learning Objectives

Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Define common organ failure syndromes in the critically ill, such as respiratory failure, shock, and sepsis
  • Practice evidence-based strategies for management of complex patients with multiple organ system dysfunction
  • Discuss management of the post-surgical critical care patient
  • Demonstrate ultrasonographic image acquisition and interpretation of cardiac, lung, abdominal, and vascular images
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform the following procedures: central vascular access, intubation, bronchoscopy, emergency cricothyrotomy, and percutaneous tracheotomy
