Oncology Nursing Core Curriculum: The Vital Role for Nurses in Addressing Tobacco Use with Cancer Patients

Nurses play a vital role in the patients' cancer journey, approaching their tobacco use in a non-judgemental compassionate and caring way will have a profound impact on patients willingness to address their tobacco dependence.

This online CNE course is created by internationally known experts in the field of tobacco dependence. It will focus on the benefit patients receive when they quit tobacco during active treatment for cancer. Patients will experience reduced toxicity from treatment, a lower likelihood of cancer recurrence, reduced risks for secondary cancers, and improved specific and overall survival. Here you will discover the many tools that are available to you to help your patients make this behavior change.

Target Audience

This CNE course is designed for nurses caring for oncology patients.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the prevalence of tobacco use
  • Explain the impact of smoking on morbidity and mortality
  • Cite the specific implications of tobacco use on the development and progression of cancer and the effectiveness of cancer treatment
  • List the treatment options for tobacco dependence treatment
  • Recite the benefits of quitting tobacco use
  • Discuss nursing roles, challenges and outcomes from an opt out referral program integrated into cancer care
  • Identify models for integrating tobacco use disorder treatment into applicable healthcare settings
