Small Bowel Video Capsule Endoscopy: Training and Competency Assessment - Online CME Course

Access to this online course is available from the date of purchase until the course expires on February 28, 2027.

Elizabeth Rajan, M.D., FASGE and Stephanie L. Hansel, M.D., M.S., FASGE, AGAF, FACG

Video capsule endoscopy (VCE) is currently considered the gold standard in the investigation of small bowel disease and is widely available in clinical practice as a noninvasive modality to examine the small bowel. This course will provide a structured VCE training curriculum with a validated assessment tool for gastroenterologists and trainees and includes 30 hours of specific training. The course includes 4 hours of didactic tutoring, hardware and software instruction, and review of cases with VCE experts. Participants are then expected to complete 25 VCE interpretations. A formalized and validated assessment tool was developed and referred to as the Capsule Competency Test (CapCT). This test evaluates the fundamentals of knowledge for the procedure including indications and contraindications, and the ability to accurately identify, interpret, and document VCE findings. Participants are required to complete the CapCT as part of their training.

Target Audience

Mayo Clinic gastrointestinal trainees, fellows, gastroenterologists, and gastroenterology trainees world-wide.

Learning Objectives

Upon conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Recite knowledge of capsule endoscopy hardware and software
  • Identify and interpret capsule endoscopy findings accurately
  • Formulate clinical recommendations based on overall clinical impression

SectionTitleDescription
1Part A: Introduction to Small Bowel Video EndoscopyPart A of the introductory section, Elizabeth Rajan, MD, FASGE delves into the world of Small Bowel Video Capsule Endoscopy (VCE), covering key aspects of this non-invasive diagnostic modality for small bowel disease. Dr. Rajan explores its history, the hardware involved, patient selection criteria, contraindications, and more.

Part B: Capsule Software Overview

Part B: Capsule Software Overview, presented by Dr. Stephanie Hansel, offers a comprehensive guide to using the software for reading video capsule studies. The tutorial covers essential steps, including login, study selection, and navigation within the software interface. Dr. Hansel demonstrates how to optimize the viewing experience and provides valuable insights into landmarks, reading techniques, and annotations for efficient study evaluation. The presentation concludes with practical tips for a productive reading experience, emphasizing the importance of adequate lighting, minimizing distractions, and managing fatigue.
Part C: Introduction to Reading CasesIn Part C of the introduction section, the faculty introduces the hands-on portion of reading video capsule endoscopy cases.  Three cases will be introduced, reviewed, and findings discussed.  By the end of this section, learners will have an understanding of how to thoroughly and confidently read cases without supervision.
2Case StudiesSection two contains 25 real-life case studies, each requiring approximately 45 minutes for reading and analysis using the VCE software. Following the case reading, learners will review a 15-minute video for each study with expert faculty analysis. This approach will ensure learners have a comprehensive understanding of the findings in each case.
3AssessmentSection three is a formalized and validated assessment tool that was developed by our Mayo Clinic VCE experts and referred to as the Capsule Competency Test (CapCT). Test items were selected by consensus among staff capsule endoscopists. This test evaluates the trainees’ fundamental knowledge of the procedure including indications and contraindications, complications, and the ability to accurately identify, interpret, and document VCE findings. This test-based assessment includes 3 sections with a variety of multiple choice questions, and short video clips for case study review, ending with a review of a full case study.
