Objectives:

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner should be able to:

  • List surgical interventions to palliate patients with malignant bowel obstruction.
  • Identify patients who would benefit from surgical referral.

Bio:

Dr. Nabil Wasif completed a Surgical Oncology Fellowship from the John Wayne Cancer Institute in Los Angeles from 2007-2009 and then joined the Department of Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Arizona as an Assistant Professor. His residency training was at the New York Presbyterian Hospital- Cornell. He has an established GI oncology surgical practice, including pioneering the use of HIPEC at his institution, which is now a three-state referral center for patients with advanced malignancies. He has served as Program Director for the general surgery residency program and is now a full Professor of Surgery. His currently serves as Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology and Endocrine Surgery and as Vice Chair of Education for the Department of Surgery at Mayo Clinic Arizona. Dr. Wasif also has a Master of Public Health in quantitative methods from the Harvard School of Public Health and his research focuses on cancer health care delivery and comparative effectiveness of therapies. To date he has over 100 publications, several book chapters, and is actively involved in multi-center trials.
