Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, the learner should be able to:
- Think critically about outcomes associated with commodification of healthcare.
- Describe the philosophical foundation and outcomes associated with hospice care and palliative care.
- Give examples of pressures effecting current practice of end-of-life care and examine how these pressures might effect the future of the field.
Bio:
Shawn Abreu, MD practices hospice and palliative medicine and serves as a medical director at Hospice of the Valley in Phoenix, Arizona, where he cares for patients and teaches medical students, residents, and fellows. He received his medical degree from the University of Texas, Medical Branch, before completing his residency training in family medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine Phoenix, and then his fellowship training in hospice and palliative medicine at the Mayo clinic in Arizona. He is coauthor of the book, Death and Dying, published in 2021.
