DESCRIPTION
This course will provide background and practical aspects of operating a carbon ion/heavy particle therapy center, as well as treatment considerations, radiobiology, physics, and current literature that is pertinent to treating patients with heavy ions. This series will occur once monthly.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe technological considerations and beam characteristics of carbon ion accelerators.
- Discuss the physical aspects of clinical carbon ion beams including dosimetry, treatment planning, and treatment delivery.
- Describe the biological underpinnings of carbon ion therapy and compare and contrast with photons and protons.
- Outline the role of carbon ion therapy in the treatment of a spectrum of malignancies.
