COURSE DESCRIPTION

Direct acting oral anticoagulants (DOACs) are increasingly utilized over warfarin to prevent stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation. This practice is reflected by current guidelines, which recommend DOACs as first-line anticoagulation. However, in patients with established left atrial appendage thrombus, warfarin remains the standard of care. This presentation will review the available literature highlighting the potential role of DOACs in patients with left atrial appendage thrombus. Finally, this presentation will explore the role of periprocedural DOACs in patients who have undergone LAA closure.

At the conclusion of this knowledge-based CE session, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the available literature on DOAC use compared to warfarin in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation and LAA thrombi
  2. Explain efficacy and safety considerations in selecting and dosing DOACs for the treatment of LAA thrombus
  3. Identify patients who may benefit from LAA closure and the role of periprocedural DOACs
