COURSE DESCRIPTION

The use of direct-acting oral anticoagulants for the management of non-valvular atrial fibrillation and venous thromboembolism has increased since their introduction to the market. The presence of co-existing renal dysfunction complicates the safety and efficacy of these treatment options. This presentation will review the new evidence regarding safety and efficacy of apixaban and rivaroxaban in patients with chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease.

At the conclusion of this knowledge-based CE session, participants should be able to:

  • Review pharmacokinetic changes relevant for apixaban and rivaroxaban in chronic kidney disease and end stage renal disease.
  • Discuss current recommendations for use and dosing of apixaban and rivaroxaban in patients with renal dysfunction.
  • Summarize new evidence for the safety and efficacy of three pharmacologic oral anticoagulation options for atrial fibrillation and venous thromboembolism in patients with chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal diseases
