COURSE DESCRIPTION

2016 American Pain Society guidelines on the management of postoperative pain recommend that clinicians consider use of gabapentinoids as a part of perioperative pain management. Current literature calls into question the appropriateness of the gabapentinoids due to a lack of efficacy, increase in adverse effects, potential for abuse, and toxicity risk. This presentation will review current literature and provide insight into appropriate use of gabapentinoids for acute pain in the perioperative patient population.

At the conclusion of this knowledge-based CE session, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the pharmacology of the gabapentinoids
  • Review literature pertaining to perioperative gabapentinoid use for acute pain management
  • Identify toxicity, misuse, and abuse considerations relating to gabapentinoid use
