COURSE DESCRIPTION

As of January 2020, medical marijuana has been legalized for use in 33 states. State policies continue to change and we will presumably see this number continue to increase in the coming years. As more states legalize marijuana for both medicinal and recreational purposes, it is likely that we will encounter more patients utilizing this substance for numerous reasons. One of the indications more commonly cited as a reason for its use is various types of pain. This presentation aims to review literature on use of medical marijuana for pain treatment and additional factors to take into consideration when caring for patients using medical marijuana.

At the conclusion of this knowledge-based CE session, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe mechanisms of action of medical marijuana in pain relief
  2. Review evidence of medical marijuana use in chronic pain management
  3. Discuss medication management considerations for patients using medical marijuana
