COURSE DESCRIPTION

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) has been a difficult clinical syndrome to treat as few interventions have been shown to provide major benefits despite extensive research. One pharmacological therapy class that is frequently debated for their utility in ARDS is corticosteroids. There is significant practice variability in their use due to studies producing conflicting results over the last few decades. Recently, the DEXA-ARDS and RECOVERY trials have shown the potential benefits of corticosteroids in ARDS which could lead to practice changes. This presentation will review the pathophysiology of ARDS and corticosteroids impact, compare and contrast major historic key literature, and discuss recent landmark trials including how they fit into the landscape of what is already known.

At the conclusion of this knowledge-based CE session, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the mechanism of benefit for corticosteroids in Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)
  2. Compare and contrast key historic literature evaluating the use of corticosteroids in ARDS
  3. Identify how recent landmark trials on corticosteroids in ARDS impacts management
